Mahatma Gandi Peace Award 2011

Mahatma Gandi Peace Award winner, hon.Mahipala Herath, Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa Province.

The Gandhi Peace Award nominees are distinguished by having made, over a period of years, a significant contribution to the promotion of an enduring international peace founded on justice, self-determination, diversity, compassion, and harmony, achieved through cooperative and non-violent means—in the spirit of Gandhi.
The Gandhi Peace Award is marked by a significant medallion and a certificate with an inscription summing up the work for peace of a distinguished citizen of the world. The medallion features the profile of Mohandas K. Gandhi, with his words “Love Ever Suffers/Never Revenges Itself” cast in bronze. The recipient’s name is added to a weighty carved statue of the Mahatma. The Award is presented at a ceremony held approximately once a year, at which a distinguished peacemaker is recognized and given the opportunity to present a message of challenge and hope. It is to be awarded “for contributions made in the promotion of international peace and good will.”
The Award has always been presented in person to each recipient.

St. Mary’s College Kegalle should go out favourites to win the Sabaragamuwa’s “Battle of the Golds” against Kegalu Vidyalaya in their 33rd encounter to be played at the Kegalle Esplanade on March 26 and 27 (Saturday and Sunday). The Marians are enjoying their best ever season having secured no less than nine outright wins during the season and drawn the balance six games to remain unbeaten. Two of the matches were abandoned due to rain.

Kegalu Vidyalaya on the other hand have played 16 matches, winning one, losing two and drawing the rest.

St. Mary’s College will be led by fifth year coloursman, Malinda Gunaratne who has scored over 700 runs and his off spinners had proved to be deadly to their opponents capturing 91 wickets. He has been the mainstay of the side.

Christopher Denipitiya is the vice captain of the side who has scored over 600 runs and captured over 60 wickets. Prince Jayakumar has been another top performer capturing 60 wickets and scoring over 400 runs.

Kegalu Vidyalaya will be led by sixth year coloursman Chaluka Weerasinghe who has scored over 650 runs and captured 15 wickets. Deputy skipper Udara Tillakasri has performed well with both bat and the ball scoring 675 runs and capturing 60 wickets with his spinners. Tharaka Somatillake has scored 550 runs and captured 25 wickets.

Though he Marians go out favourites, Kegalu Vidyalaya are determined to clinch their maiden victory, which they could have achieved four years ago when the match had to be abandoned when 10 runs away from victory with six wickets in hand before a crowd invasion.

"St Mary’s College, Kegalle scored a first innings win over St Anne’s College, Kurunegala in their schools Under-19 cricket tournament match concluded at Kurunegala yesterday."

Highlight of the match was a fine double of 60 and 43 a match-bag of 7 for 90 by St Mary’s College skipper Malinda Gunaratne. Malinda Gunaratne who is an off-spinner has now captured 81 wickets for the season and also scored 650 runs during the season. St Anne’s College who made 173 in the second innings set their opponents a victory target of 150 in 9 overs and they made 73 for 3.

St Anne’s College: 177 and 173 all out in 59.3 overs (M Udagedara 46, M Perera 40, C Perera 27, M Afsal 25, Malinda Gunaratne 4 for 30, Christopher Denipitiya 3 for 37, Prince Jayakumara 3 for 78).

St Mary’s College, Kegalle, set a victory target of 197 in 25 overs, accepted the challenge boldly and threw caution to winds to reach their target with just three balls to spare to register their fifth outright victory when they registered a five wicket win over St Thomas’ College, Matale in their school’s under 19 cricket tournament match concluded at Matale yesterday.

This was Marians fourth outright in the tournament games.
The Marians scored at almost at eight runs per over in their run chase. Architects of their win were Christopher Denipitiya 52 not out (3 sixes, 4 fours, 42 balls), Malinda Gunaratne 47 (4 sixes, 1 four), Kevin Galdeniya 43 (8 fours, 24 balls).
For the Thomians S N Wijetunga made 81 with 6 sixes and 4 fours which helped them to declare at 243 for 8 and set a daunting task which the Marians achieved racing against the clock.

28th National IT Conference

CSSL conducted the 28th National Information Technology Conference under the ‎theme “ICT 2.0. Empowering Sri Lanka to a New Social Order” on 11th & 12th of ‎August 2010 at the Hotel Galadari. This annual event is an Industry focused ICT ‎Conference which provides a forum to learn from industry visionaries and to network ‎with peers. ‎

The Platinum Sponsor for the 28th National IT conference was Novell, Silver Sponsor ‎was Mobitel, Strategic partner was ICTA agency in Sri Lanka while the Daily News ‎and Rupavahini Corporation came as the Media Partners. The CSSL wishes to express ‎its sincere gratitude to all these organizations and their management for their ‎sponsorship which contributed towards the success of this event. ‎

The Ceremonial Inauguration was held on 10th evening with Professor Tissa Vitarana ‎Minister Technology and Research as the Chief Guest and Mr. Lalith Weeratunga, ‎Secretary to HE the President as the Guest of Honour with a gathering of ‎distinguished invitees.‎

This year we received more than 30 papers for evaluation which shows the ‎recognition of NITC among the ICT community. The conference was very well ‎attended on both days and a total of 23 papers were presented by local and foreign ‎speakers during the two-day conference addressing the topics most relevant to “ICT ‎‎2.0. Empowering Sri Lanka to a New Social Order”. A distinguished panel of keynote ‎speakers and other speakers gave a diverse set of insights into the advancements on ‎different ICT frontiers around the world.‎

We, at St.Mary's College web team find it difficult to manage all the web features due to increasing of user registrations, account inquiries, message board post moderations and ect..

So we do hope to increase our web panel. We are looking to add another administrator. Anyone who is interested in this purpose can apply to this. We are looking to elect an administrator as soon as possible due to the increasing of current workload.

Temporary Unavailability of Web Hosting Services for Schools

We have discovered a security compromise that has taken place on 19th February 2010 - Friday night. At the moment we are investigating the matter further. Current findings indicate that there is some data loss and some of the backup files have been affected as well. We will be restoring the available data from the backups and NOC staff will be contacting individual schools to update them the exact impact of this event on their school web site.

This event apparently has taken place due to a some weaknesses of the original framework adapted for hosting School web sites.

While deeply apologizing for the inconvenience due to possible data loss, we will make use of this opportunity to setup a different more secure framework for hosting school web sites. Such a model we believe , to a great extent, will reduce the possibility of this type of event occurring in the future. Until the new framework is established, the web hosting facility for the Schools will not be available. We expect to finalize the new framework within this week. We expect your kind cooperation to get back to normalcy as quickly as possible.

A boy from St. Mary’s College, Kegalle, Ramesh Asiri Jayachandra de Silva, got through his A/L exam and was studying for the Institute of Chartered Accountants, intermediate level. He had an inborn talent for sports and along with his studies; he took to athletics at the age of 14.
At the age of 17 years he switched to weightlifting and right from the start he had shown great aptitude for the sport. Fortunately Badra Pushparanjanie, Sports Officer Kegalle District Training Centre, recognised his passion and enthusiasm for weightlifting and made arrangements for RN Wickramasinghe of the Sports Ministry to come once a week to Kegalle and train him according to a scientific schedule with the proper guidance.
This combination proved to be a fruitful one and Asiri, within a very short time, developed high levels of skill and showed great promise. From the year 2006 onwards he started to enjoy startling successes at the sport but still continued to be the same simple boy not allowing fame to affect his humble nature. He never uttered a word about his achievements but painstakingly continued his rigorous training. If only the iron wheels he lifted could speak, they would testify to the agony his body underwent and the anguish in his mind with every snatch and lift as he relentlessly strived for excellence.
Finally he experienced the ecstasy when he had his hour of glory at the Junior Commonwealth Games in February this year in Malaysia. Asiri won the silver medal in the over 105kg weight category with a lift of 255kgs. It was fitting reward indeed for this poor 20-year-old rural youth who worked so hard for fame.
On his return to Sri Lanka, Asiri did not rest on his laurels but returned to his weightlifting routine. Early this month he was at Reid Avenue training with the South Asian Games (SAG) pool where the Sports Ministry provided food and lodging facilities.
All of a sudden he had complained that he was having fever. As he was attached to the Sri Lanka Navy voluntary force an officer swiftly responded and had him admitted to the Hospital. Then, instead of undergoing proper treatment, he got discharged from the hospital against medical advice and returned home to Kegalle. He had thereafter seen a doctor and after a blood test the doctor has said the report was normal. That night his condition had taken a turn for the worse and he was admitted to the Kegalle National Hospital.
He spent three days at Kegalle Hospital but sadly his mentor Badra said, “No one informed me of his serious condition. His coach, Wickramasinghe phoned me and said that necessary action must be taken immediately. I spoke to a few friends of his and they said that as his condition was normal they didn’t want to inform me. Somehow one of his friends had visited him and informed that Asiri was in a critical condition and a few hours later I came to know that he had breathed his last at the hospital.”
His coach Wickremasinghe had predicted that at the forthcoming SAG, a Gold medal was a certainty for Asiri. But this was not to be. The cruel hand of fate decreed otherwise.

l 2007 − Over 105kgs at Sri Lanka Amateur Weightlifting C’ship won first place, lifted 185 kgs
l 2007 − Over 105kgs at weightlifting intermediate level C’ship won 1st place, lifted 195 kgs
l 2007 − At 33rd National Sports Meet organised by Sports Ministry, Over 105kgs won third place, lifted 211kgs
l 2007 − Over 105kgs at National Weightlifting C’ship won 2nd place, lifted 231kgs
l 2007 − Over 105kgs at South Asian Power Building contest in Chennai, India won the South Asian C’ship, lifted 225kgs
l 2008 − Over 105kgs at Junior National Weighlifting won 1st place, lifted 240kgs
l 2008 − Over 105kgs at National Weightlifting C’ship won 3rd place, lifted 238kgs
l 2009 − Open weight category at 35th Grand National Sports Festival at Polonnaruwa won 2nd place, lifted 251kgs
l 2009 − Over 105kgs at Junior Commonwealth Games in Malaysia won Silver Medal, lifted 255kgs.

He has been knocking at the door and waiting for this opportunity for a long period. His prayers were not answered despite being a prolific run getter in both forms of the game in the domestic scene.

But the day has finally dawned for Nishad Tharanga Paranavithana to put on the Sri Lankan cap as he has been selected to represent the country in the Test series against Pakistan. He is one of the good products of St. Mary's College Kegalle to represent the country after former Sri Lanka wicket keeper batsman Mahesh Gunatilleke.

This has been a dream come true for the 26 year old left hander from Kegalle where he completed a highly successful school cricket career at St. Mary's College. In fact Paranavithana was able to make vast strides in the school cricket scene where he piled up over one thousand runs for three successive years from 1999 to 2001.

In his final year at school he was able to make a lasting impression while scoring well over 1,500 runs including a career best 203 against Taxila MMV Horana and seven other centuries.

Not surprisingly he was picked as the most outstanding player and the best batsman in the outstation category.The other significant fact in his school career was that he had the credit of captaining all age groups namely under 13, 15, 17 and finally the first eleven under 19 team.

His talent and potential was so much that he was invited to represent the SSC under-23 team while still at school.This was following a request from the former Sri Lanka junior coach Owen Mathew and former Sri Lanka Academy coach Anura Tennekoon who realised the fact that this player would someday make his mark as a top class batsman.

After nearly a decade their ideas and thoughts have finally materialized and Tharanga Paranavithana is well set to launch his career in the big league that would carry him towards another era.

His career took a new turn after joining the Sri Lanka A team where he was able to make some significant contributions with the bat under the guidance of Coach Chandika Hathurusinghe. Hathurusinghe always believed Tharanga was a gifted player.
