St. Mary’s College Kegalle should go out favourites to win the Sabaragamuwa’s “Battle of the Golds” against Kegalu Vidyalaya in their 33rd encounter to be played at the Kegalle Esplanade on March 26 and 27 (Saturday and Sunday). The Marians are enjoying their best ever season having secured no less than nine outright wins during the season and drawn the balance six games to remain unbeaten. Two of the matches were abandoned due to rain.

Kegalu Vidyalaya on the other hand have played 16 matches, winning one, losing two and drawing the rest.

St. Mary’s College will be led by fifth year coloursman, Malinda Gunaratne who has scored over 700 runs and his off spinners had proved to be deadly to their opponents capturing 91 wickets. He has been the mainstay of the side.

Christopher Denipitiya is the vice captain of the side who has scored over 600 runs and captured over 60 wickets.  Prince Jayakumar has been another top performer capturing 60 wickets and scoring over 400 runs.

Kegalu Vidyalaya will be led by sixth year coloursman Chaluka Weerasinghe who has scored over 650 runs and captured 15 wickets. Deputy skipper Udara Tillakasri has performed well with both bat and the ball scoring 675 runs and capturing 60 wickets with his spinners. Tharaka Somatillake has scored 550 runs and captured 25 wickets.

Though he Marians go out favourites, Kegalu Vidyalaya are determined to clinch their maiden victory, which they could have achieved four years ago when the match had to be abandoned when 10 runs away from victory with six wickets in hand before a crowd invasion.
